Understand the reward before comparing
Betting bonuses can include free-bet tokens, bonus credit, enhanced prices or other account rewards. These are not interchangeable. A free bet may exclude its token stake from the return, while a price boost changes the odds on a qualifying selection. Some offers apply only to new customers; others are targeted at eligible existing accounts.
Begin by identifying the exact reward, not just the largest number in the headline. Our free bets guide explains token returns with a worked example. If a promotion is described as casino-only, it is not a sports-betting welcome reward. Keeping those categories separate makes a comparison more meaningful and helps you avoid choosing an offer that does not match the product you intended to use.
Separate qualifying bets from rewards
A qualifying bet normally uses your own money and must meet the promotion's conditions. The reward follows only if the required steps are completed. Check whether registration, an opt-in, a promotional code or a particular referral route is necessary before depositing. A direct link to a bookmaker does not automatically provide access to every advertised partner offer.
Read what happens if the qualifying bet is voided, cashed out or placed on an excluded market. Check whether it must be a single bet or whether accumulators are permitted. The Pricedup review and 10bet review show how brand-level offer information sits beside the rest of the operator profile. Keep your qualifying activity within a budget you chose independently.

Minimum odds and deadlines matter
Minimum odds are an eligibility condition, not an instruction to select a riskier bet. If a promotion requires decimal odds of 2.0 or greater, a selection at 1.8 would not meet that condition. Check whether the threshold applies to the total accumulator price, each leg or another defined part of the bet.
Deadlines can start at registration, deposit, qualification or reward issue. Those clocks need not be the same. A token may expire before the event you wanted to bet on, and several tokens may have individual restrictions. Write down the relevant dates before acting. Our checklist widget highlights these separate stages so the promotion can be understood as a process rather than a single headline promise.
What changed in UK bonus rules?
From 19 January 2026, Gambling Commission rules capped incentive wagering requirements at ten times and restricted mixed-product promotions. The wagering cap concerns requirements to play through bonus funds before funds become withdrawable. It does not remove every eligibility rule, minimum-odds condition or expiry date from a sports promotion.
The mixed-product rules also distinguish between required activity and the reward. A promotion requiring a sports bet in exchange for casino spins mixes product categories; a sports bet rewarded with a sports free bet stays within the same category. The treatment of unrestricted customer-choice credit is more nuanced. Do not assume that a rule change makes an old advertisement current or that all restrictions have disappeared.
Check payment and account eligibility
A promotion can restrict which payment methods qualify even when those methods are otherwise accepted by the bookmaker. Read this before depositing, not afterwards. Also check whether the offer is limited by customer, household, address, device or another condition. Opening an account under a different-looking brand may not make you a new customer under the promotion's definition.
Use accurate registration details and complete the operator's verification process. Avoid assuming that a successful deposit proves promotional eligibility. If the wording is unclear, ask the operator to explain it before you commit money. Our best betting apps guide takes a broader view of comparison, including licensing, documented features and account controls rather than treating bonus access as the only consideration.
Compare practical terms, not face value
Imagine two hypothetical rewards worth £20 in total. One consists of a single £20 token; the other contains four £5 tokens with separate expiry conditions. Their headline totals match, but their flexibility differs. Neither is automatically £20 of withdrawable cash. The return depends on the token rules and the outcome of any bet.
Compare the qualifying spend, reward format, expiry, eligible markets and any withdrawal conditions together. Avoid combining these into an invented cash-value score: we cannot know future results. The five apps above are ranked by our existing evidence rubric, not by a calculation of likely winnings. Read a full review whenever a short offer label leaves an important question unanswered.
Use dated offer information properly
Promotions change more frequently than an operator's basic identity. An article update, app-store image or archived screenshot cannot independently confirm a current reward. Our directory records published offer information and significant restrictions, while individual operator pages remain the place to confirm the current promotion and complete rules.
Treat a mismatch between the headline and detailed terms as a reason to pause, not as permission to select the more generous interpretation. The new betting apps guide explains why an unfamiliar brand deserves the same careful checks as an established bookmaker. A useful comparison should make uncertainty easier to identify, rather than hiding it behind a larger bonus badge or an artificial countdown.
Decide whether an offer suits you
Before accepting a bonus, explain its steps in your own words: what you pay, what qualifies, what you receive and when it expires. If you cannot do that, read the terms again or ask for clarification. Choosing not to accept a promotion is a valid outcome of the comparison. Compare the expiry clock with the fixtures you actually plan to follow.
Set account limits independently of the reward and do not increase your spending to chase qualification. Use our review directory to compare the bookmaker itself and the related guides below for specific questions. The most useful bonus information is understandable and relevant to your needs; a headline amount on its own is not enough to make a sound comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Is a betting bonus the same as cash?
Usually not. It may be a free-bet token, restricted bonus credit or a different reward. Check how it can be used and whether the original bonus stake is included in a winning return.
What is a qualifying bet?
It is the activity required to unlock a promotion, usually a bet using your own funds that meets specified conditions. Minimum odds, deadlines, permitted markets and settlement rules can all affect qualification.
What is the UK bonus wagering cap?
From 19 January 2026, the Gambling Commission capped incentive wagering requirements at ten times. Other offer conditions can still apply, so the cap does not mean every bonus has no restrictions.
Can I claim a partner offer through a direct bookmaker link?
Not necessarily. Some offers require an eligible marketing partner, code or referral route. Our direct operator links do not guarantee that a particular partner promotion is available.
Does a larger advertised bonus mean a better app?
No. Compare the reward format, qualifying spend and restrictions, then assess the operator, mobile access and account controls separately. Our ratings measure documented evidence, not bonus size or potential winnings.
