What is a free bet?
A free bet is usually a promotional token that can be used on an eligible betting selection. It is not necessarily withdrawable cash and may be subject to rules that differ from an ordinary money-funded bet. The word free describes the reward, not necessarily the steps required to receive it.
Many welcome promotions require a qualifying bet using your own funds before tokens are issued. Others are targeted rewards for existing customers. Check which arrangement applies and whether you are eligible before registering or depositing. Our betting bonuses guide covers the wider range of reward types, including why a casino promotion should not be confused with a sports-betting free bet.
Understand stake-not-returned winnings
With a stake-not-returned token, the free-bet stake is excluded from the winning return. For a hypothetical £10 token at decimal odds of 3.0, the winnings would be £20: £10 multiplied by the odds minus one. An ordinary £10 cash bet at the same odds would return £30 in total, including its £10 cash stake.
That difference explains why a £10 token is not the same as a £10 cash balance. A losing selection produces no winnings, and the example does not predict an outcome. Use the calculator on this page to change the token amount and odds, then check the actual operator's settlement rules. Do not assume every reward uses this particular return structure.

Free bet (stake not returned)
£20.00
Winnings only if the selection wins. The free stake of £10.00 is not paid back.
Cash bet
£30.00
Total payout if the selection wins, made up of £20.00 profit plus your £10.00 stake back. A losing cash bet loses the stake.
Terms vary by offer. Check the operator’s own rules for stake-returned versions, qualifying markets and expiry.
Read the qualification sequence
Promotions can require registration, a specific code, an opt-in, a qualifying deposit and a settled bet in a particular order. Missing an early step may prevent the reward from being issued. Read the sequence before paying money into an account, especially when the advertisement came from a marketing partner rather than the operator's ordinary homepage.
Also check what counts as a qualifying result. Voided selections, cash-outs, non-runners and excluded bet types may be treated differently. A promised reward can depend on settlement rather than placement. The 7Bet review and Betano review offer brand-level information that helps place an offer in context, but the operator's current complete rules determine actual eligibility.
If a reward does not appear, check the qualifying bet's status and contact support with its reference number. Keep a copy of the applicable terms and any confirmation message, rather than placing another bet merely to see whether a token will eventually arrive automatically.
Compare token sizes and expiry
A £30 reward issued as three £10 tokens is not identical to one £30 token. Tokens may need to be used separately, may not be divisible and can carry specific restrictions. Check whether unused value is lost if you place a smaller bet, and whether any change is returned to the account.
Expiry is equally important. Identify when the clock starts and whether a token must be placed or settled by the deadline. Some promotions issue tokens in stages rather than all at once. An attractive total can be impractical if it does not match the events or markets you intended to use. Compare these details before treating two headline offers as equivalent.
Minimum odds and market restrictions
The qualifying bet and the free bet may have different minimum-odds conditions. A rule applying to the first money-funded bet does not automatically describe how the reward can be spent. Read both parts and check whether singles, multiples, in-play bets or selected sports are excluded.
Decimal odds express the total return on an ordinary winning cash bet relative to its stake. They do not guarantee that the selection will win. For a stake-not-returned token, subtracting one from the decimal price removes the token stake from the calculation. Do not increase the odds simply to make the calculator display a larger figure. It is an explanation tool, not a selection recommendation.
Check settlement and withdrawals
Free-bet tokens may be excluded from cash out, and using cash out on a qualifying bet can affect eligibility. Check the promotion's own wording instead of assuming a general app feature applies to every promotional bet. The same caution applies to early payout and other settlement features.
Distinguish the token balance from any cash winnings credited after settlement. Read whether further conditions apply before withdrawal and which payment routes are available. Account verification remains separate from the promotion. Our best betting apps guide explains how payment information and clear account controls fit into a broader comparison. We do not award performance scores for withdrawal speed that we have not tested.
UK free-bet rules in context
UK incentive rules changed on 19 January 2026, including a ten-times cap on wagering requirements and restrictions on mixed-product promotions. These changes do not mean that every free bet is available without a qualifying stake or that minimum odds and expiry conditions have vanished.
A sports-betting reward should be assessed as a sports offer, not merged with unrelated casino spins to inflate its headline value. Our new betting apps guide also explains why a new brand or refreshed interface does not establish better promotional terms. Compare the current reward and the actual operator separately. An old screenshot or a recently edited article is not proof that a particular promotion remains available.
Use reviews to compare the bookmaker
After understanding a reward, check the wider service. Look at the legal operator, licence details, relevant sports coverage and account controls. The top five above are selected using our shared editorial evidence rubric, not by estimating a token's future winnings. Equal scores are ordered alphabetically so the ranking is reproducible.
Use the full review directory for individual bookmaker information and compare only a manageable shortlist. Decide what you can afford independently of any qualification requirement, and do not chase an expired reward. A free-bet comparison is useful when it makes the rules clearer. It should not encourage extra spending simply because a reward has been attached to a bet.
Frequently asked questions
Is a free bet really free?
The token may be provided as a reward, but receiving it often requires a qualifying money-funded bet. No-deposit and targeted promotions have their own conditions. Read the complete offer before assuming no spending is required.
What does stake not returned mean?
The free-bet token stake is excluded from the winning return. For example, a £10 token at decimal odds of 3.0 would produce £20 winnings if it wins, rather than the £30 total return of a £10 cash bet.
Can I withdraw a free-bet token?
Usually a token must be used on an eligible selection rather than withdrawn as cash. The treatment of any winnings depends on the operator's terms, account verification and withdrawal arrangements.
Can free bets expire?
Yes. Check the issue date, expiry deadline and whether the token must be placed or settled in time. Rewards issued in instalments can have separate deadlines and token conditions.
Does the calculator predict what I will win?
No. It illustrates the arithmetic of a hypothetical winning bet under a stake-not-returned assumption. It does not predict results, establish eligibility or account for every operator-specific term.
